Creating Images for free
I have heard countless times that having to pay for Midjourney is a pain. I get it everyone’s not in the same situation and sometimes you like the option to try something out before you fully commit. well as an alternative to Midjourney there are dozens of free text to image solutions that have been available for over a year now.
I prefer DALL·E 3 over most options because it’s easy to access and is more accurate then most when it comes to understanding user guidance.
You can access it via Bing Chat by simply asking it to create an image of then describing it or via Open AI though it’s only currently free through Bing Chat.
On a computer you’ll have to use Microsoft Edge or at least it made me and yes I did barf a little on the inside
I left it in creative mode and used the prompt:
”create me an image of a woman with braids making drinks behind bar shot by professional photographer”
Pretty good results for a vague prompt right? They look a little airbrushed and fake though lets try to get a bit mores specific with the next batch
”A photorealistic image of a woman with two long braids behind a bar making a martini Medium shot: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens on a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV camera shot by professional photographer, candid shot, warm lighting”
This is somewhat better with a more specific prompt describing how we want the image to look and the tools it should reference when generating the image but still in the same league of the previous set in my opinion. Let’s try something different.
“create an image of a photorealistic Man in navy business suit smiling for professional linkedin profile headshot, business professional, sharp focus “
So as you can see the tool isn’t great for photorealism but let’s explore what other things it can do.
“Create an image of two green men walking through enchanted forest at night in the style of pixar movies with red and purple color scheme“
Besides violating copyright this was actually pretty dope.
Let’s try something else
“create image of flash paper with anime style tattoos”
This accomplished the task but lets expand the prompt to see if we can get better results
“create image of flash paper with numerous tribal and geometric tattoos with no pencils desks or drawing instruments visible”
These are magnificent but even asking it to not show any drawing instruments or a desk itself we were unable to keep them away completely.
“flash paper of geometric spiritual tattoos”
By keeping the prompt simple we actually got exactly what we asked for except for one image.
With that in mind lets try something else with a simple prompt.
“A cat sitting in a bowl”
To Summarize our brief experience DALLE 3 is great with simple prompts for images but it’s not great when it come’s to photorealistic things but that fine as it is better then most at following the directions given in the prompt itself.
